Eagles “honored” to visit the white house

In the past week, rumors in the sports world have swirled regarding the Eagles potential rejection of their pending White House invite. In a February 6th article published by The Sun, it was reported that Philly would “snub an invitation” to the White House if or when they were invited.
Following outrage on social media from right-wing Trump supporters and praise from those on the opposite side of the spectrum, a number of sources have come out and shut down the claims.
“We would be honored to visit the White House.“It’s one of the things we had looked forward to doing and we look forward to receiving the invitation,” the source stated.
The rumors likely stemmed from previous comments and more subtle “statements” made about President Trump by both Eagles players and those in the front office.
Eagles owner, Jeffrey Lurie reportedly called Donald Trump’s presidency “disastrous” following the team’s 2018 Super Bowl victory and their subsequent rejection of a White House invite that year.
“This is not where you brandish a group of people because they own assets in a sport we love, supporting what many of us perceive as, you know, one [expletive] disastrous presidency,” Lurie reportedly stated. Lurie has also donated to former President Barack Obama’s and Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaigns.
Jalen Hurts has also been rumored to be a stark critic of President Trump. Though he is known for being reserved about many of his personal and political beliefs, he did gain attention for his rather neutral response to a question about the President’s attendance at Super Bowl LIX. Hurts also met with former President Obama a mere week before the 2024 Presidential Election. Following the meeting, Hurts called Obama an “all-time leader” and a “great presence.”
This trend of national champions rejecting White House invitations is not new, with the most notable instance being the 2016-17 Golden State Warriors who declined to visit following their NBA Finals victory during President Trump’s first term. The 2018 Seattle Storm also rejected an invitation following their WNBA Finals win.
