Mayor Wu prepares to face Congress in Washington D.C.

Mayor Michelle Wu heads to Washington D.C. this week to discuss Boston’s city policies and if she plans to adhere to federal immigration enforcement.
According to Boston.com, Boston’s position as a sanctuary city makes compromising state and federal laws regarding immigration more challenging.
To Republicans in Congress, Wu and other sanctuary cities’ policies are “pro-illegal aliens” and shield criminals from justice. However, Wu and other democratic leaders, restore public trust and safety.
President Trump has issued executive orders limiting the funding towards sanctuary cities and their policies, and there’s pending legislation that will do the same.
Following President Trump’s election, Wu emphasized the importance of the Boston Trust Act, frustrating several Republican leaders. She stated that local law enforcement would not be expected or required to assist in the deportation of those not involved in serious crimes.
She also insisted that the Boston Police Department will continue to serve federal officials with criminal matters.
While her stance has earned her backlash, Wu hopes to protect Boston as she prepares for a tight reelection race against Josh Kraft.
“This is our city. We’re going to continue following & enforcing the laws to keep all Bostonians safe. And it goes without saying that our police commissioner has my complete confidence & support,” she wrote in a Bluesky post.
Wu has been asked to testify alongside Mayor Eric Adams of New York City, Brandon Johnson of Chicago, and Mike Johnson of Denver.
