Mayor Michelle Wu Testifies About Immigration Policies To Congress

By Vivienne Felber
Mayor Michelle Wu is in Washington today to testify in front of House Lawmakers. Wu is facing backlash from republicans because they feel that Boston’s immigration enforcement policies are misguided and possibly illegal. The hearing is in front of the GOP-led House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. It will focus on the sanctuary policies in Boston, New York City, Chicago, and Denver with the mayors from each city appearing.
Wu started her testimony by introducing herself as a daughter of immigrants. She also utilized the time to defend Boston’s police and overall public safety. Wu casted a spotlight on the fact that since taking office, the city has set a new record low for gun violence every year.
Wu started criticizing the Trump administration, stating that they are putting fear into citizens. Wu says “A city that’s scared, is not a city that is safe. A land ruled by fear is not the land of the free.” Wu argues that Trump’s solution for mass deportations of undocumented immigrants would wreck the economy. She also blasted Tom Homan, Trump’s Border Czar, for lying about Boston and insulting Boston’s Police commissioner.
