The House of Representatives voted 224-198 on Thursday to censure Rep. Al Green of Texas for his conduct during President Donald Trump’s congressional address.
Green interrupted Tuesday’s speech by yelling that Trump had “no mandate to cut Medicaid” while shaking his cane at the president. Green was escorted from the floor after several warnings to be quiet.
House Republicans voted unanimously to censure Green, and were joined by 10 Democrats. The censure will not affect Green’s rights or privileges as a House member, it only serves as a formal expression of House disapproval for his actions.
“What I did was from my heart. People are suffering and I was talking about Medicare… I did it from my heart and will suffer whatever the consequences are. But truthfully, I would do it again,” Green said.
