Boston Red Sox Postpone White House Visit

The Boston Red Sox are postponing their White House visit due to the government shutdown, and have rescheduled for May. Team president Sam Kennedy stated last week that the organization was uncomfortable celebrating at the White House with so many government employees out of work or working for no pay.
Recently, manager Alex Cora said he may reconsider visiting the White House. Cora’s comments came the same day the Washington Post reported the Trump administration tried to block Hurricane Maria relief funding for Puerto Rico. Several other Latin American Red Sox players also are saying they may not attend. Players such as Chris Sale, Steve Pearce and Mitch Moreland have said they will attend.
Along with safety concerns and player turnout, the now five-week government shutdown is causing logistical concerns with the visit. Originally, the Red Sox were to visit the nation’s capital Feb. 15, but they are now planning for some time in early May when the team plays in Baltimore.
