LAS VEGAS — The Kansas City Chiefs defense ranks second in the NFL, according to Fox Sports. In the 2024 playoffs, the unit has only allowed five total touchdowns, one less than the San Francisco 49ers.
The Chiefs also have the youngest defense in the league this season. The average age of the squad is just 25 years old, making Super Bowl LVIII the first playoff appearance for many of the players.
Veteran defensive tackle Chris Jones said he thinks the key to his teammate’s success will be eliminating distractions ahead of Sunday.
“It’s so easy to get distracted with the media. Vegas is a scenery itself. So much adversity out here, whether it’s the city of Vegas, the nightlife,” Jones said. “Just know why we’re here.”
Jones not only is older than many of his defensive teammates, he also has playoff experience in his back pocket. Since being drafted by Kansas City in 2016, he has made two other Super Bowl appearances. He’s also among the few Chiefs players who faced off against the 49ers in Super Bowl LIV.
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes stressed the importance of approaching the week leading up to the Super Bowl with regularity. In a press conference Wednesday, he said he’s treating this week like any other – Wednesday’s focus was about the core offense.
“Obviously we have the media and stuff like that you have to do,” Mahomes said. “But at the same time, it’s a normal week now and we’re gonna get back to practice and do what we would do for a normal game day.”
Mahomes is looking for his second straight Super Bowl victory and third career title, a record that sets him up to be one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time.
