Steward Health Care temporarily closes Good Samaritan Hospital’s cancer unit

Steward Health Care announced that it has temporarily shut down the hematology-oncology infusion center at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Brockton.

The company cited the main reasons for the closure, including staffing shortages and the departure of the unit’s medical director. 

In an interview with the Boston Globe, a Steward Health Care spokesperson said the unit is temporarily closed “while we recruit a new provider and staff.”

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) stated that they are “in communication with the practice and will assist them as needed to ensure patients continue to have access to treatment and services.”

Steward Health Care operates nine medical centers across the state of Massachusetts, all of which have struggled to operate due to staffing shortages and financial pitfalls. 

Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey has called for the company to turn over its local facilities to new operators.
