The worst of flash floods in decades are hitting eastern Spain. Thousands of people have found themselves trapped– whether it is in their cars, trucks, homes– as heavy rainfall has hit southern Spain this week.

According to the New York Times, Diego Hernande, a passerby of the city of Valencia, was on his way to his mother’s funeral during the flooding. Him and his wife were driving on Tuesday night when a stream of mud and water started to appear on their tires. Seconds later, another car had piled on top of theirs after water started nearing the top of their seats at three feet high.

“It was like an apocalypse,” said Hernandez.

The death toll has risen to approximately 158 people as of yesterday. Many are still missing. Spain has received anywhere from a month to a year’s worth of rain in a single day.

Spanish districts Valencia and Catalonia are on high alert, and the national weather agency says more rain is expected during the day.
