Carl Sciortino’s Medford campaign headquarters filled up quickly tonight as soon as the polls closed. Friends, volunteers, and colleagues gathered around tables to talk about their hopes for the night. One computer displaying the updated results in the back of the hall was the center of everyone’s attention.

As the results began to trickle in people remained hopeful that Sciortino had a chance to win the Democrat primary for the fifth congressional district. They believed his forward thinking campaign ideas about equal rights, gay marriage, and education reform made him a front-runner. These supporters even gave the state representative the name of progressive candidate because of the passion behind his beliefs.

Once Sciortino dropped to fourth place everyone began to get nervous. One of his college friends Nick Lepham said, “ I believe he still has a chance to win it. I mean he has such great ideas I don’t see how people couldn’t vote for him.”

Sciortino was still in fourth place when the race was called and Katherine Clark became the Democrat winner in the primary election.
Once the news broke among the supporters the mood became more somber but still people remained excited to watch Sciortino make his entrance.

Once he arrived he took center stage and received a round of applause lasting over 2 minutes. Tears filled his eyes as he humbly accepted his defeat and gave his support to Clark. Scortino thanked his supporters including his husband of 11 days whom he called “his rock” throughout the campaign. Once he finished his speech Scortino invited everyone to stay for” a great party” and began to mingle with guests. Even though he had lost the state rep stayed in good spirits and enjoyed everyone’s support.  He will be back on Beacon Hill to continue his progressive agenda.
